How do I change the front wheel bearing on my 1999 VW Passat?

Tools

- Jack and jack stands

- Lug wrench

- Socket wrench

- 17-mm socket

- 19-mm socket

- 22-mm socket

- 32-mm socket

- Flat-head screwdriver

- Pry bar

- Hammer

Instructions:

1. Turn off the engine and park the car on a level surface. Apply the parking brake.

2. Jack up the car so that the front wheel that you are working on is off the ground. Place a jack stand under the car for safety.

3. Remove the hubcap or wheel cover from the wheel. Use 17mm wrench.

4. Remove the lug nuts from the wheel, but do not remove them completely.

5. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry off the brake caliper guide pins from the caliper casting. There are two guide pins per caliper.

6. Remove the brake caliper from the rotor by pulling it straight off of the rotor. Hang the caliper out of the way with a piece of wire or bungee cord. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose.

7. Use the 19-mm socket to remove the brake rotor from the hub.

8. Remove the dust cover from the hub using the flat-head screwdriver.

9. Remove the snap ring from the spindle using a pair of snap-ring pliers. There are two snap rings on some models so make sure you remove both of them.

10. Remove the castle nut from the spindle using a 32-mm socket. Use the 22-mm to hold the rotor while removing the castle nut from the spindle.

11. Use a pry bar to pry the hub assembly off the spindle.

12. Remove the old bearing from the hub assembly. Use the hammer and screwdriver to knock out the old bearing from the hub.

13. Clean the hub and bearing surfaces with a wire brush.

14. Press the new bearing into the hub assembly using a press.

15. Reinstall the snap ring on the spindle.

16. Reinstall the castle nut on the spindle and torque to 184 ft-lbs (250 Nm).

17. Reinstall the dust cover on the hub.

18. Reinstall the brake rotor on the hub.

19. Reinstall the brake caliper on the rotor.

20. Reinstall the brake pads on the caliper.

21. Reinstall the lug nuts on the wheel and tighten them snugly.

22. Lower the car off the jack stands.

23. Reinstall the wheel covers.

24. Test the brakes to make sure that they are working properly.
