1. Gather Necessary Tools:
- Clean rag or paper towels
- Funnel
- Mercedes-Benz approved ATF (automatic transmission fluid)
2. Vehicle Preparation:
- Park your SLK 230 on level ground and ensure the engine is turned off.
- Engage the parking brake to keep the vehicle secure.
3. Locate the Transmission Fluid Dipstick:
- Open the hood of your SLK 230.
- Identify the red-capped transmission fluid dipstick. It is usually located near the back of the engine bay, closer to the firewall.
4. Remove and Check Fluid Level:
- Pull the dipstick out while holding the red cap with a clean rag or paper towels.
- Wipe the dipstick clean using a rag or towels.
- Reinsert the dipstick fully into its tube.
- Pull it out again and check the fluid level.
5. Check the Fluid Color and Smell:
- The transmission fluid should be reddish in color and have a faint oily odor.
- If the fluid is dark brown, cloudy, or has a burnt odor, it may need to be changed.
6. Add Fluid if Necessary:
- If the fluid level is low, add enough Mercedes-Benz approved ATF to bring it between the "min" and "max" marks on the dipstick.
- Use a funnel to add the fluid to avoid spills.
7. Reinsert the Dipstick:
- Once you've added the required amount of fluid, reinsert the dipstick fully into its tube.
8. Close the Hood:
- Close the hood of your SLK 230.
9. Verify Fluid Levels:
- After driving for a short distance, park the car on a level surface again and recheck the transmission fluid level following the same procedure.
- Make sure it is between the "min" and "max" marks on the dipstick.
Remember that different models and years of the Mercedes-Benz SLK may have slightly different procedures. Always consult your vehicle's owner's manual for specific instructions if you are unsure.
