1) Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
2) Remove the air cleaner housing.
3) Locate the timing belt cover. It is located at the front of the engine, below the water pump.
4) Remove the timing belt cover.
5) Locate the timing marks. The camshaft timing mark is located on the camshaft sprocket. The crankshaft timing mark is located on the crankshaft pulley.
6) Align the timing marks. The camshaft timing mark should be aligned with the "0" mark on the camshaft sprocket. The crankshaft timing mark should be aligned with the "0" mark on the crankshaft pulley.
7) If the timing marks are not aligned, loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt. Use a 14mm socket to do this.
8) Turn the crankshaft pulley until the timing marks are aligned. Use a 10mm socket to do this.
9) Tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt. Use a torque wrench to tighten it to 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
10) Replace the timing belt cover.
11) Replace the air cleaner housing.
12) Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
Now, you need to check the timing with a timing light.
1) Connect the timing light to the battery.
2) Attach the timing light sensor to the number one spark plug wire.
3) Start the engine.
4) Point the timing light at the crankshaft pulley.
5) The timing light will flash. The flash should occur when the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the "0" mark on the timing belt cover.
6) If the flash does not occur when the timing mark is aligned, adjust the timing. Do this by loosening the crankshaft pulley bolt and turning the crankshaft pulley until the timing marks are aligned.
7) Once the timing is set, tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt.
8) Turn off the engine.
9) Disconnect the timing light.
The timing on your Ford Aspire is now set.
