To replace the thermostat on a 1986 Ford Ranger 2.9L, follow these steps:

1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Locate the thermostat housing on the front of the engine block. It is on the driver's side, just below the upper radiator hose.

3. Loosen the two bolts holding the thermostat housing in place.

4. Remove the thermostat housing and gasket from the engine.

5. Remove the old thermostat from the housing.

6. Install the new thermostat in the housing, making sure the jiggle valve is at the top.

7. Reinstall the housing gasket and bolts, and tighten the bolts securely.

8. Connect the negative battery terminal.

9. Add coolant to the engine, if necessary.

10. Start the engine and check for leaks.
