- A lug wrench
- A small screwdriver
- A flashlight
- A tire pressure gauge
- A piece of chalk
- A helper (optional)
Steps:
- Place a chock behind the drive wheels of the truck to help prevent it from rolling.
- Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels that you want to check the brakes on.
- Use the lug wrench to remove the lug nuts and then remove the wheel.
- Use the flashlight to inspect the brake pads and brake shoes. They should be at least 1/4-inch thick. If they are any thinner, they should be replaced.
- Use the small screwdriver to pry back the brake dust shield so you can see the brake adjuster.
- Use the chalk to mark the position of the adjuster nut before you turn it.
- Turn the adjuster nut clockwise until you feel resistance, then back it off 1/4-turn.
- Reinstall the wheel and lug nuts, and then tighten the lug nuts until they are snug.
- Repeat this process for the other wheels on the truck.
Remember, it is always a good idea to have someone help you check your brakes if possible, but you can do it yourself with the right tools.
