Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels, but do not remove them completely.
3. Use a jack to safely raise the front of the vehicle until the wheels are off the ground.
4. Place jack stands securely under the vehicle to support it.
Step 2: Remove the Wheel
5. Remove the lug nuts and take off the front wheel.
Step 3: Disassemble the Steering Knuckle
6. Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle by removing the cotter pin and loosening the nut that holds the tie rod end in place.
7. Disconnect the brake caliper from the steering knuckle by removing the two bolts that hold it in place.
7. Slide the brake caliper out of the way, but do not disconnect the brake line.
8. Disconnect the ABS sensor wires (if equipped) from the steering knuckle.
9. Remove the bolts that hold the steering knuckle to the lower control arm and the upper control arm.
10. Separate the steering knuckle from the upper and lower control arms.
Step 4: Remove the Old Ball Joint
11. Use a ball joint removal tool or a pickle fork to separate the ball joint from the steering knuckle.
Step 5: Install the New Ball Joint
12. Insert the new ball joint into the steering knuckle, ensuring that it is properly seated.
13. Install the snap ring that holds the ball joint in place.
14. Reattach the steering knuckle to the upper and lower control arms. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
15. Reconnect the tie rod end, brake caliper, and ABS sensor wires (if equipped).
Step 6: Test the Ball Joint
16. Gently raise and lower the steering knuckle to ensure the ball joint is moving smoothly.
Step 7: Reinstall the Wheel
17. Reinstall the front wheel and tighten the lug nuts.
Step 8: Lower the Vehicle
18. Slowly lower the vehicle from the jack stands.
19. Remove the jack stands and fully tighten the lug nuts.
Step 9: Perform an Alignment
20. Since you have disconnected certain steering components, it's important to have the front end alignment checked and adjusted as needed to ensure proper steering and handling.
