1. Gather Tools:
- Brake fluid (DOT 3 or as recommended by the manufacturer)
- Clear tubing (a minimum of 3 feet long and transparent)
- Wrench or pliers
- A glass container or jar for collecting brake fluid
2. Safety First:
- Wear eye protection, gloves, and appropriate clothing to protect yourself from brake fluid splashes.
- Brake fluid can be harmful if ingested, so be cautious and avoid contact with skin and eyes.
3. Identify the Bleeder Screws:
- Locate the bleeder screws on each brake caliper. They are usually small and fitted with rubber caps to prevent air from entering the system.
4. Prepare for Bleeding:
- Remove the rubber caps from the bleeder screws.
- Attach one end of the clear tubing to the bleeder screw and the other end to the glass container or jar.
- Ensure that the jar is partially filled with brake fluid to prevent air from being drawn back into the system.
5. Start Bleeding:
- Start with the furthest brake caliper from the master cylinder.
- Have a helper press down on the brake pedal and hold it while you loosen the bleeder screw slightly.
- Watch the fluid in the clear tubing; air bubbles should come out with the brake fluid.
- Continue bleeding until no more air bubbles are seen and only brake fluid flows through the tubing.
- Tighten the bleeder screw securely.
6. Repeat for Other Calipers:
- Repeat the above process for each brake caliper, starting from the farthest one and working your way back to the caliper closest to the master cylinder.
7. Check Brake Fluid Level:
- Once all air bubbles are removed, check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir.
- Add brake fluid if necessary to bring it to the proper level indicated by the "FULL" or "MAX" marking.
8. Test the Brakes:
- Pump the brake pedal several times to ensure that it feels firm and responsive.
- If everything is in order, replace the bleeder screw caps.
