What are the Department of Transportation regulations for open face helmets?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) is the governing body for the DOT. DOT regulations require open-face helmets to meet the following standards:

- Helmet strength. Helmets must be able to withstand a force of 225 pounds of impact without cracking or breaking.

- Chin strap. Chin straps must be securely attached to the helmet and must be able to withstand a force of 500 pounds.

- Face shield. Face shields must be made of shatter-resistant material and must be able to protect the wearer's face from flying debris.

- Reflective material. Reflective material must be placed on the back and sides of the helmet so that the wearer can be seen by other motorists at night.

In addition to these requirements, DOT regulations also specify the materials that can be used in the construction of open-face helmets. Helmets must be made of a durable, shock-absorbing material, and they must not contain any sharp edges or points that could cause injury to the wearer.
