How do you Replace Clutch On John Deere Model M?

Replacing the clutch on a John Deere Model M tractor requires careful disassembly and reassembly. Here's a general guide to help you with the process:

Note: Before starting, ensure that you have the necessary tools, parts (new clutch plate, pressure plate, release bearing, etc.), and a workshop manual for your specific John Deere Model M tractor.

1. Preparation:

- Disconnect the battery to ensure the tractor is electrically isolated.

- Position the tractor on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.

- Remove the seat and any other components that may obstruct access to the clutch housing.

2. Drain the Transmission Oil:

- Place a drain pan under the tractor.

- Locate the transmission oil drain plug (usually at the bottom of the transmission housing).

- Remove the drain plug and allow the transmission oil to drain completely.

3. Remove the Clutch Housing:

- Remove the bolts securing the clutch housing to the transmission housing.

- Carefully separate the clutch housing from the transmission housing.

4. Inspect the Clutch:

- Check the condition of the old clutch plate, pressure plate, and release bearing for wear and damage.

- Compare the thickness of the old clutch plate with the new one to assess its wear level.

5. Install the New Clutch Plate:

- Position the new clutch plate onto the splines of the transmission input shaft.

- Make sure the clutch plate is seated properly.

6. Install the Pressure Plate:

- Place the pressure plate over the clutch plate.

- Install the pressure plate bolts and tighten them evenly and gradually.

7. Install the Release Bearing:

- Inspect the release bearing for any damage or wear. Replace it if necessary.

- Install the release bearing onto the clutch fork.

8. Reattach the Clutch Housing:

- Carefully align the clutch housing with the transmission housing.

- Secure the clutch housing using the bolts that were removed earlier.

9. Adjust the Clutch:

- Loosen the locknut on the clutch control linkage.

- Turn the adjusting screw until there is slight free play in the clutch pedal (usually around 1 inch).

- Tighten the locknut to secure the adjustment.

10. Refill the Transmission Oil:

- Refill the transmission with the required amount and type of transmission oil.

- Consult your tractor's manual for the specific oil capacity and type.

11. Reattach the Battery:

- Reconnect the battery terminals to restore electrical power to the tractor.

Note: After replacing the clutch, it's advisable to drive the tractor cautiously for a few hours to allow the new clutch components to properly seat and break in.
