Step 1: Prepare your vehicle.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Place the transmission in park (automatic transmission) or first gear (manual transmission).
- Turn on the hazard lights.
- Set the warning triangle about 100 feet behind your vehicle to alert oncoming traffic.
- If you are working in the dark, use the flashlight to provide adequate lighting.
Step 2: Locate the spare tire and tools.
- Open the trunk and remove the spare tire and tools from the designated storage compartment.
- Ensure the spare tire is properly inflated and ready for use.
Step 3: Jack up your vehicle.
- Place the jack under the vehicle, near the flat tire, but not under the axle.
- Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire. Do not remove them completely.
- Carefully raise the vehicle with the jack until the flat tire is off the ground.
Step 4: Remove the flat tire.
- Finish removing the lug nuts with the lug wrench.
- Remove the flat tire from the vehicle.
Step 5: Place the spare tire on the wheel hub.
- Align the spare tire with the wheel hub.
- Replace the lug nuts and hand-tighten them.
Step 6: Lower the vehicle.
- Carefully lower the vehicle with the jack until it is resting on the ground.
Step 7: Tighten the lug nuts.
- Use the lug wrench to securely tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Do not overtighten the lug nuts.
Step 8: Lower the jack and put away the tools.
- Lower the jack.
- Store the jack and tools back in the trunk.
Step 9: Drive slowly to the tire shop.
- With the spare tire in place, drive slowly and cautiously to a tire shop to have the flat tire repaired or replaced.
