How do you change the timing chain on 1989 ford 302?

How to Replace a Timing Chain on a 1989 Ford 302

Parts Needed:

- New timing chain

- New timing chain tensioner

- New timing chain cover gasket

- New crankshaft seal

- New camshaft seal

- Oil pan gasket set

Tools Needed:

- Socket set

- Wrench set

- Screwdriver

- Pry bar

- Hammer

- Timing light

- Engine degreaser

- Safety glasses

Instructions:

1. Park your car on a level surface and allow the engine to cool down completely.

2. Engage the parking brake and put the car in gear.

3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

4. Remove the air cleaner housing.

5. Locate the timing chain cover on the front of the engine. It is held in place by a series of bolts.

6. Remove the bolts that hold the timing chain cover in place and remove the cover.

7. Remove the old timing chain by unscrewing the bolt that holds it in place on the crankshaft sprocket.

8. Remove the timing chain tensioner by unscrewing the bolt that holds it in place.

9. Clean the timing chain housing with engine degreaser and a rag.

10. Install the new crankshaft seal.

11. Install the new camshaft seal.

12. Install the new timing chain tensioner.

13. Install the new timing chain by slipping it over the crankshaft sprocket and the camshaft sprocket.

14. Tighten the bolt that holds the timing chain in place on the crankshaft sprocket.

15. Adjust the timing chain tension by using the timing chain tensioner. The timing chain should be tight, but not too tight.

16. Install the timing chain cover gasket and the timing chain cover.

17. Reinstall the bolts that hold the timing chain cover in place.

18. Reinstall the air cleaner housing.

19. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

20. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to check for any leaks.
