Disconnect the battery.
This will prevent accidental electrical shocks.
To disconnect the battery:
* Open the hood of your car.
* Locate the negative battery terminal (usually marked with a "-" sign).
* Loosen the nut on the negative battery terminal with a wrench.
* Remove the nut and lift the negative battery cable off of the battery terminal.
Set the battery cable aside.
Remove the starter mounting bolts.
The starter is mounted to the engine with two or three bolts.
To remove the starter mounting bolts:
* Locate the starter mounting bolts. They are usually located near the bottom of the starter.
* Loosen the starter mounting bolts with a wrench.
* Remove the starter mounting bolts completely.
Slide the starter out of the car.
Once the starter mounting bolts have been removed, you can slide the starter out of the car.
To slide the starter out of the car:
* Grasp the starter with both hands.
* Pull the starter straight out of the car.
Be careful not to drop the starter.
Remove the starter solenoid.
The starter solenoid is located on the back of the starter.
To remove the starter solenoid:
* Locate the starter solenoid.
* Disconnect the electrical connections to the starter solenoid.
* Use a wrench to loosen the starter solenoid mounting bolts.
* Remove the starter solenoid mounting bolts and remove the starter solenoid.
Install the new starter.
To install the new starter, simply reverse the steps that you used to remove the old starter.
Be sure to:
* Tighten the starter mounting bolts securely.
* Connect the electrical connections to the starter solenoid.
* Reinstall the battery cable.
Test the starter.
Once you have installed the new starter, you should test it to make sure that it works properly.
To test the starter:
* Turn the key in the ignition to the "Start" position.
* The starter should engage and turn the engine over.
If the starter does not engage, check the electrical connections and make sure that the battery is fully charged.
