How do you install cv joints in a Ford Laser?

Installing CV (constant velocity) Joints in a Ford Laser involves several steps. Here is a general guide to help you with the process. It is important to note that the specific steps may vary depending on the model and year of your Ford Laser. Refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific details and safety guidelines.

Tools and Materials needed:

- Replacement CV Joints (Inner or Outer)

- CV joint grease

- Socket set

- Jack and jack stands

- Pry bar or CV joint removal tool

- Wire brush

- Brake cleaner

Procedure:

1. Safety First:

- Ensure that your vehicle is parked on a level surface and apply the parking brake.

- Engage the vehicle in gear (if manual transmission) or "Park" (if automatic transmission). This prevents the vehicle from rolling.

- Place chocks behind the wheels on the opposite side of where you're working to add additional security against rolling.

2. Remove the Wheel:

- Use a lug wrench or impact wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the relevant wheel(s).

- Jack up the vehicle until the affected wheel is off the ground. Secure the vehicle with jack stands.

- Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.

3. Disconnect the Tie Rod End (Inner CV Joint only):

- For the inner CV joint, you may need to disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Consult your vehicle's service manual for the specific procedure for your model.

4. Remove the Driveshaft:

- Unbolt the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle.

- Support the driveshaft with a jack or transmission jack to prevent it from falling.

- Remove the bolts holding the driveshaft to the wheel hub or transmission, depending on whether you're working on the inner or outer CV joint.

- Carefully slide the driveshaft out from the hub/transmission.

5. Remove the Old CV Joint:

- Use a pry bar or CV joint removal tool to separate the CV joint from the driveshaft or transmission axle.

- If necessary, use a wire brush to clean any rust or debris from the mating surfaces.

6. Prepare New CV Joint:

- Apply a generous amount of CV joint grease to the splines of the new CV joint.

- Make sure the grease is evenly distributed.

7. Install the New CV Joint:

- Carefully insert the new CV joint into the transmission axle or driveshaft.

- Make sure it seats properly and is fully engaged.

8. Reattach the Driveshaft:

- Reinstall the driveshaft into the wheel hub or transmission, securing it with the bolts you removed earlier.

9. Reattach the Tie Rod End (Inner CV Joint only):

- If you removed the tie rod end, reconnect it to the steering knuckle following the recommended procedure in your vehicle's service manual.

10. Reattach the Wheel:

- Reinstall the wheel onto the lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts by hand until they are snug.

- Lower the vehicle carefully using the jack.

11. Tighten the Lug Nuts:

- Once the vehicle is on the ground, use a lug wrench or impact wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to ensure even tightening.

12. Test Drive and Check:

- Start the engine and test drive the vehicle to ensure that there are no abnormal noises or vibrations.

Note:

- It is important to ensure that the CV joints are properly installed and secured. If you are unsure about any steps or encounter difficulties, consult a professional mechanic or refer to detailed repair instructions specific to your Ford Laser model.
