How do you replace valve cover gaskets in 2000 catera?

Tools Needed:

- Pliers

- Flat head screwdriver

- 8mm socket ratchet

- 10mm socket ratchet

- 5/8” socket ratchet

- Extension for ratchet

- New valve cover gaskets

- RTV silicone sealant

- Rags

- Oil drain pan

Steps:

1. Park your vehicle on a level surface. Engage the parking brake and allow the engine to cool.

2. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electrical shock.

3. Remove the engine cover, located on top of the cylinder head.

4. Locate the four valve cover bolts on each side of the engine. Using the appropriate socket ratchet, loosen and remove these bolts.

5. Once all of the bolts have been removed, gently lift off the valve cover. Be careful not to spill any oil that may be on the valve cover gasket.

6. Clean the old gasket material off of the valve cover and cylinder head using a rag and some WD-40.

7. Apply a thin bead of RTV silicone sealant to the new valve cover gasket. Be sure to follow the instructions on the label for the sealant.

8. Place the new valve cover gasket on the cylinder head. Make sure that the gasket is properly aligned with the bolt holes.

9. Replace the valve cover bolts and tighten them in a crisscross pattern to the recommended torque.

10. Reinstall the engine cover and reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

11. Start the engine and allow it to run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the valve covers and if none are found, enjoy your newly sealed valve covers!
