1. Gather Tools and Parts:
- New universal joint (size specific to your truck)
- Socket wrench set
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Pliers
- Torque wrench
- Safety goggles and gloves
- Grease (provided with the new universal joint or purchased separately)
2. Prepare the Vehicle:
- Park the truck on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and engage the transmission into "Park" (for automatic) or first gear (for manual) to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
- Chock the wheels to ensure safety.
- Raise the vehicle with a jack and secure it on jack stands to gain access to the underneath.
- Remove the wheels if necessary for better access.
3. Locate the Universal Joint:
- The universal joint is usually located near the center of the driveshaft connecting the transmission to the rear axle. It has a cross-shaped shape with four bearing caps.
4. Remove the Driveshaft:
- Loosen the bolts or nuts securing the universal joint to the driveshaft and transmission yoke using a socket wrench.
- Remove the bolts or nuts completely and carefully lower the driveshaft to gain better access to the universal joint.
5. Remove the Universal Joint:
- Inspect the universal joint for damage or wear.
- Use a screwdriver or pliers to remove the snap rings or C-clips holding the bearing caps in place.
- Remove the bearing caps to access the needle bearings and trunnions.
6. Clean and Prepare:
- Clean the journal surfaces and bearing caps thoroughly to remove dirt and old grease.
7. Reassemble the Universal Joint:
- Insert the new trunnions into the new universal joint.
- Place the needle bearings into the bearing caps.
- Position the bearing caps over the trunnions.
- Reinstall the snap rings or C-clips to secure the bearing caps.
8. Lubricate:
- Apply a generous amount of grease to the trunnions and into the bearing caps.
9. Install Driveshaft:
- Carefully lift the driveshaft and align it with the transmission yoke and the rear axle yoke.
- Reinstall the bolts or nuts that secure the universal joint to the driveshaft and transmission yoke. Tighten securely using a torque wrench to the manufacturer's specifications.
10. Test Drive:
- Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and reinstall the wheels if removed.
- Start the engine and test drive the vehicle for any unusual vibrations or noises.
