1. Gather Tools:
- Ratchet set (with various sized sockets and extensions)
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Pliers
- New wiper motor (Make sure it's compatible with your vehicle's model and year)
2. Disconnect the Battery:
- Open the hood of your Cavalier.
- Locate the negative (-) terminal of your car's battery. It's usually marked with a "-" sign.
- Use the wrench to loosen and remove the bolt or nut holding the negative terminal cable.
- Pull the cable from the battery terminal. This disconnects the power supply to the car.
3. Remove Windshield Wiper Blades and Arms:
- Place a cloth or towel under the wiper blades to prevent them from falling onto the windshield and cracking it.
- Press the release tab on the wiper arm and lift it upward to disengage it from the windshield.
- Repeat the process for the other wiper arm.
- If the arms have retaining nuts or bolts, use the socket or wrench to loosen and remove them.
4. Remove the Wiper Motor Cover:
- Locate the wiper motor cover under the hood, usually near the base of the windshield.
- Remove the screws or bolts holding the cover in place using a screwdriver or socket wrench.
- Lift and remove the cover to reveal the wiper motor assembly.
5. Disconnect Electrical Connectors:
- Locate the electrical connectors attached to the wiper motor. They may be secured with clips or rubber seals.
- Gently pry off the clips or remove the seals to release the connectors.
- Label each connector using masking tape so you know where they go when reconnecting.
6. Disconnect Vacuum Lines (if equipped):
- If your vehicle has vacuum-powered wipers, you'll need to disconnect the vacuum lines attached to the motor.
- Use pliers to gently remove the vacuum lines from their fittings.
7. Remove Wiper Motor:
- Locate the bolts holding the wiper motor to the firewall or the mounting bracket.
- Use the appropriate socket or wrench to loosen and remove the bolts.
- Gently pull the motor assembly out of its mounting location.
8. Replace Wiper Motor:
- Insert the new wiper motor into the mounting location. Make sure the mounting studs or bolts align with the holes.
- Install and tighten the bolts or screws to secure the new motor in place.
9. Reconnect Electrical Connectors and Vacuum Lines:
- Reconnect the electrical connectors to their respective terminals. Ensure the connectors are pushed in securely until they click.
- Reattach any previously removed vacuum lines to the new motor.
10. Reinstall Wiper Blades and Arms:
- Fit the wiper arms onto the splines on the new motor shafts.
- Press down until you hear a click or feel the arms lock into place.
- Once both wiper arms are installed, put the wiper blades back on.
11. Reconnect Battery:
- Reconnect the negative battery cable to the negative terminal of the battery.
- Secure it with the bolt or nut you removed earlier.
12. Test the Wiper Motor:
- Turn the ignition key to "On" without starting the engine.
- Activate the windshield wipers using the wiper switch.
- Check if the wipers are working properly and moving smoothly.
Remember to disconnect the battery whenever working on electrical components to avoid any electrical hazards. If you're unsure or uncomfortable performing any steps, it's always best to seek help from a qualified mechanic or auto repair shop.
