The powertrain control module (PCM) is a computer that controls the engine and transmission of a vehicle. If the PCM fails, it can cause a variety of problems, including engine stalling, transmission slipping, and check engine lights.
Replacing a PCM is a relatively simple task that can be completed in about an hour. However, it is important to follow the steps carefully to avoid damaging the PCM or other components.
Tools and Materials Needed
* New PCM
* 10mm socket
* Ratchet
* Extension
* Flat-head screwdriver
* Phillips-head screwdriver
* Torque wrench
Instructions
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Locate the PCM. The PCM is located on the passenger side of the engine compartment, near the firewall.
3. Remove the two 10mm bolts that hold the PCM in place.
4. Carefully disconnect the electrical connectors from the PCM.
5. Remove the PCM from the vehicle.
6. Install the new PCM by reversing the steps above.
7. Tighten the bolts that hold the PCM in place to 10 ft-lbs.
8. Reconnect the battery cable.
After you have installed the new PCM, you will need to reprogram it. This can be done by a qualified mechanic or by using a scan tool.
Tips
* Be careful not to drop the PCM when you are removing or installing it.
* Make sure that the electrical connectors are properly seated before you start the vehicle.
* If you have any questions about how to replace the PCM, consult a qualified mechanic.
