Tools and Materials Needed:
- Socket wrench set
- Screwdriver
- Pliers
- Steering column lock plate removal tool (if applicable)
- New steering column
Procedure:
1. Disconnect the Battery: Begin by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery to prevent any electrical accidents during the process.
2. Remove the Airbag (if equipped): If your Sunbird has an airbag, you'll need to carefully remove it first. Follow the specific instructions provided in your vehicle's service manual.
3. Detach the Steering Wheel: Remove the steering wheel by undoing the bolts holding it in place. Be careful not to drop the steering wheel.
4. Remove the Column Covers: Remove the covers and shrouds surrounding the steering column. These are typically held in place by screws or plastic clips.
5. Disconnect Electrical Connectors: Disconnect any electrical connectors attached to the steering column, such as those for the horn, turn signals, and cruise control. Make note of where each connector goes for easy reconnection later.
6. Remove the Ignition Lock Cylinder: Depending on your model, the ignition lock cylinder may need to be removed before you can take out the steering column. Consult your service manual for specific instructions on how to do this.
7. Remove the Steering Column Bolts: Locate the bolts holding the steering column in place and remove them. There might be bolts on both the upper and lower sections of the column.
8. Release the Steering Shaft: Disconnect the steering shaft from the steering rack or steering gearbox by removing the bolts or clamps holding them together.
9. Remove the Steering Column: Carefully remove the steering column from the vehicle by pulling it upwards. Be mindful of any wires or components that may be attached to it.
10. Install the New Steering Column: Position the new steering column in place and insert it into the steering shaft. Secure it using the bolts you removed earlier.
11. Reconnect the Steering Shaft: Reconnect the steering shaft to the steering rack or steering gearbox.
12. Reconnect Electrical Connectors: Reconnect all the electrical connectors you disconnected earlier. Ensure that each connector is properly secured.
13. Install the Ignition Lock Cylinder (if applicable): If you had to remove the ignition lock cylinder earlier, reinstall it now.
14. Reattach the Steering Wheel: Secure the steering wheel back onto the steering column using the bolts you removed earlier.
15. Install Column Covers: Reinstall the steering column covers and shrouds.
16. Reconnect the Battery: Finally, reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
17. Test the Steering: Test the steering by turning the steering wheel left and right. Ensure that it operates smoothly and there are no unusual noises or resistance.
Remember, replacing the steering column can be a complex task, so it's important to follow your vehicle's service manual for specific instructions and safety guidelines. If you are unsure about any step, it's best to consult with a professional mechanic.
