Necessary Tools and Supplies:
- Replacement Ignition Switch
- Socket Wrench Set
- Phillips Head Screwdriver
-Flat Head Screwdriver
- Torx Screwdriver
- Flashlight
- WD-40 or lubricant
Step 1: Safety Precautions:
Ensure you have disconnected the vehicle's battery before proceeding. This prevents any accidental electrical shocks. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery terminal.
Step 2: Remove Steering Cover and Airbag:
1. Insert a small flat head screwdriver into the gap between the plastic cover and the steering column.
2. Gently pry open the plastic cover and set it aside.
3. Locate and remove the Torx screws that hold the steering wheel airbag module in place.
4. Carefully disconnect the airbag connectors using a flat-head screwdriver. Be cautious when handling the airbag.
5. Remove the airbag module and place it aside in a safe location.
Step 3: Remove Ignition Lock Cylinder:
1. Use a socket wrench to loosen the two bolts holding the ignition lock cylinder in place.
2. Once loosened, remove the bolts and pull out the ignition lock cylinder from the housing.
3. Disconnect any electrical connectors attached to the lock cylinder.
Step 4: Install New Ignition Switch:
1. Position the new ignition switch into the housing and align the bolt holes.
2. Insert the bolts and tighten them using a socket wrench. Ensure they are secure.
3. Reconnect any electrical connectors that you had previously disconnected.
Step 5: Reassemble:
1. Gently insert the ignition lock cylinder into the housing and push it in until it fits securely.
2. Reinstall the bolts removed in Step 3 and tighten them.
3. Reinstall the steering wheel airbag module and reconnect its connectors.
4. Secure the airbag using the Torx screws removed earlier.
5. Reinstall the plastic cover you removed in Step 2 and secure it.
Step 6: Test the Ignition Switch:
1. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery terminal.
2. Insert a key into the ignition switch and try turning it on and off.
3. Ensure that the electrical components (dashboard lights, radio, etc.) respond to the ignition switch's actions. Take the car for a short test drive to ensure the ignition switch is working properly.
Remember, this process can be intricate and requires attention to detail. Refer to your vehicle's service manual or consult a professional mechanic if you are not confident in performing the replacement yourself.
