Tools Required:
- Socket set
- Wrench set
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
Parts Required:
- New starter motor
- Starter solenoid (optional)
- Gasket (if needed)
Procedure:
1. Disconnect the battery. This is important to prevent electrical shock while working on the starter.
2. Locate the starter motor. In the 1997 Honda Civic EX, it is located on the passenger side of the engine, near the bottom.
3. Remove the wires connected to the starter motor. There will be two or three wires, depending on the model. Use the pliers to remove the connectors.
4. Remove the bolts holding the starter motor in place. There are usually two or three bolts. Use the socket set to loosen the bolts and remove them.
5. Remove the starter motor from the engine compartment. Be careful not to drop the starter, as it is heavy.
6. Inspect the starter motor for any damage. If there is any damage, such as cracks or broken parts, the starter will need to be replaced.
7. If a new starter motor is needed, install it in reverse of the removal procedure.
8. Reconnect the wires that were disconnected in step 3.
9. Reconnect the battery.
10. Test the starter motor to make sure it works.
Important Notes:
- Some 1997 Honda Civic EX models may have a starter solenoid located on the starter motor. If the starter solenoid is not working properly, it may cause the starter motor to not engage.
- If the starter motor is making a clicking noise but not turning, the starter solenoid may need to be replaced.
- It is important to properly torque the bolts that hold the starter motor in place. Over-tightening the bolts can damage the starter motor or the engine block.
