How do you change a water pump in 1999 Subaru Outback Legacy?

1. Park the vehicle in a safe location and turn off the engine. Allow the engine to cool down.

2. Find the water pump. It is located on the front of the engine, below the timing belt. Refer to your vehicle’s service manual for the exact location.

3. Remove the serpentine belt. Loosen the tensioner and slide the belt off the pulleys.

4. Remove the timing belt. Refer to your vehicle’s service manual for specific instructions.

5. Remove the water pump bolts and gaskets. This may require removing some other components of the engine, such as the thermostat housing.

6. Clean the water pump mounting surface. Remove all traces of the old gasket.

7. Install the new water pump. Use a new gasket and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.

8. Install the timing belt and tensioner. Follow the reverse procedure of step 4 to install the timing belt and tensioner.

9. Install the serpentine belt.

10. Fill the engine with coolant. Refer to your vehicle’s owner's manual for the specified coolant type and amount.

11. Start the engine and check for leaks. Look under the vehicle for leaks and make sure the coolant level does not drop.

12. Test drive the vehicle. Drive the vehicle around the block and make sure it is operating properly.
