How do you change oil pan gasket on a 2001 Nissan Altima?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- New oil pan gasket

- Oil filter wrench

- 10mm socket

- 12mm socket

- 14mm socket

- Oil drain pan

- Funnel

- New oil (check owner's manual for the correct type and amount)

- Rags

- Safety glasses

Instructions:

1. Prepare your car. Park your car on a level surface and apply the parking brake. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down. If you can’t crawl under your car, you will need to lift it up either with ramps and a chock or a jack and jack stands. (Never crawl under a car that is supported only by a jack.)

2. Locate the oil drain plug. The oil drain plug is located on the bottom of the oil pan. It is usually a 14mm bolt.

3. Place the oil drain pan under the oil drain plug. Make sure the pan is large enough to catch all of the oil that will drain out.

4. Loosen the oil drain plug. Use the 14mm socket to loosen the oil drain plug. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the oil pan.

5. Remove the oil drain plug. Once the oil drain plug is loose, remove it by hand. Allow the oil to drain completely.

6. Replace the oil drain plug. Once all of the oil has drained out, reinstall the oil drain plug. Tighten the plug until it is snug.

7. Locate the oil pan bolts. The oil pan bolts are located around the perimeter of the oil pan. They are usually 10mm or 12mm bolts.

8. Loosen the oil pan bolts. Use the 10mm or 12mm socket to loosen the oil pan bolts. Do not remove the bolts completely.

9. Gently pry the oil pan off of the engine. Use a pry bar to gently pry the oil pan off of the engine. Be careful not to damage the oil pan gasket.

10. Remove the oil pan. Once the oil pan is loose, remove it from the engine.

11. Clean the oil pan and the engine mating surface. Use a rag to clean the oil pan and the engine mating surface. Remove all of the old oil pan gasket material.

12. Install the new oil pan gasket. Place the new oil pan gasket on the engine mating surface. Make sure that the gasket is seated properly.

13. Install the oil pan. Carefully lower the oil pan into place. Make sure that the gasket is not pinched.

14. Tighten the oil pan bolts. Use the 10mm or 12mm socket to tighten the oil pan bolts. Tighten the bolts until they are snug.

15. Add new oil to the engine. Use a funnel to add new oil to the engine. Add the amount of oil specified in your owner's manual.

16. Start the engine and check for leaks. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks from the oil pan. If you see any leaks, tighten the oil pan bolts until the leak stops.
