1. Park the vehicle in a safe location and apply the parking brake.
2. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
3. Open the hood of the vehicle.
4. Locate the timing belt tensioner pulley, it is located on the front of the engine near the top. There is a 17mm bolt that is perpendicular to the belt. That is the tensioner.
5. There are two bolts that hold the tensioner in place and can be loosened or tightened to adjust the tension.
6. Use a 14mm wrench or socket to loosen the upper bolt.
7. Use a 17mm wrench to turn the tensioner pulley clockwise to increase tension or counterclockwise to decrease tension.
8. Tighten the upper bolt to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).
9. Recheck the tension of the timing belt by pressing on it with your thumb. The belt should deflect about 1/4 inch (6.35mm) between the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
10. If the belt tension is incorrect, repeat steps 6-9 until the tension is correct.
11. Close the hood of the vehicle and start the engine.
12. Listen for any unusual noises coming from the engine. If you hear any unusual noises, stop the engine immediately and inspect the timing belt for damage.
Note: If you are not comfortable performing this task, it is recommended to have it done by a qualified mechanic.
