Locate the diagnostic port under the driver's side dashboard. It is usually a 16-pin connector.
Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position, but do not start the engine.
Insert a jumper wire into the terminals 1 and 32 of the diagnostic port.
Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
The service engine light will start to blink.
Count the number of blinks before the light turns off. The first number is the tens digit and the second number is the ones digit of the diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
For example, if the light blinks three times, then turns off, then blinks five times, the DTC is 35.
Look up the DTC in a Nissan repair manual or online to find out what the problem is.
After you have fixed the problem, turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
The service engine light should be turned off.
If the service engine light does not turn off, or if you get a different DTC, you may need to have the vehicle diagnosed by a qualified mechanic.
