NOTE: These instructions apply to the first generation Toyota MR2 (1985-1989) and may vary for later models.
Tools and Materials:
- Replacement drive belt (the 1.6L Turbo/SC requires two belts)
- Ratchet and socket set
- Open-end wrenches
- Flat-head screwdriver
Instructions:
1. Park the MR2 on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
2. Locate the drive belts on the front of the engine. There are two belts on the 1.6L Turbo/SC engine and one on the 1.6L N/A engine. The belts are located near the top of the engine and run between the crankshaft pulley and the water pump pulley (and power steering pump pulley on models so equipped).
3. Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt for the drive belt(s) you are replacing. The tensioner pulley is located on the side of the engine opposite the crankshaft. Use a ratchet and socket to loosen the bolt until the tensioner pulley can be moved.
4. Move the tensioner pulley away from the belt. This will loosen the belt and allow it to be removed.
5. Remove the old belt by slipping it off the pulleys.
6. Install the new belt by slipping it onto the pulleys in the same way the old belt was removed.
7. Move the tensioner pulley back into place and tighten the bolt until the belt is tight.
8. Repeat steps 3-7 if you are replacing both belts.
9. Start the engine and check the belts. Make sure they are properly aligned and not too loose or too tight.
10. Turn off the engine and double-check the tensioner bolt tightness.
11. Close the hood and your MR2 is ready to drive!
