Tools Needed:
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Torx screwdriver (T30 size)
- Circlip pliers or snap ring pliers
- New key tumbler (also called an ignition lock cylinder) with keys
Instructions:
1. Disconnect the battery:
- Start by disconnecting the negative terminal (-) from the car battery to prevent any electrical accidents during the process.
2. Remove the steering column covers:
- Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the lower steering column cover.
- Gently pull the cover down and slide it off.
3. Remove the ignition switch:
- Locate the ignition switch assembly. It is usually positioned on the right side of the steering column, near the ignition keyhole.
- Use the Torx screwdriver (T30) to remove the screws securing the ignition switch assembly.
- Carefully pull the ignition switch assembly out from the steering column.
4. Remove the old key tumbler:
- Inside the ignition switch assembly, you will find a metal ring with a small tab.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry up the tab and remove the retaining ring.
- Pull out the old key tumbler from the assembly.
5. Install the new key tumbler:
- Insert the new key tumbler into the assembly, aligning it correctly.
- Replace the retaining ring and ensure it snaps securely into place.
6. Reattach the ignition switch assembly:
- Insert the ignition switch assembly back into the steering column and secure it using the Torx screws removed earlier.
7. Reinstall the column covers:
- Slide the lower steering column cover back on and secure it using the Phillips-head screws.
8. Reconnect the battery:
- Reconnect the negative (–) terminal back to the car battery.
9. Test the ignition:
- Insert the new key and try turning on the ignition to check if it works properly.
10. Test the new keys:
- Use the new keys that came with the replacement key tumbler to ensure they can unlock the doors, open the trunk, and start the car.
