How do you fix the starter on a 1999 Toyota RAV4 when it continues to run after car starts?

1. Park the vehicle safely in a level spot, apply the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

2. Locate the starter motor on your Toyota RAV4. It is usually located on the side or bottom of the engine near the transmission.

3. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. This is necessary to prevent the engine from starting while working on it.

4. Remove the starter motor from the vehicle. To remove the starter motor, you'll find two bolts that secure it to the engine block. Remove these bolts and remove the starter motor carefully so as not to spill transmission fluid.

5. Inspect the starter motor. Check the starter motor for damage, such as worn brushes, burnt wires, or a damaged solenoid. If you see any damage, you'll need to replace the starter motor.

6. Clean the starter motor. If you see any dirt or grime on the starter motor, clean it using a wire brush or compressed air. Be careful not to damage any of the components.

7. Inspect the solenoid plunger. If the solenoid plunger is sticking or damaged, it can cause the starter to continue running. Check the solenoid plunger and ensure it moves freely. If it is stuck, you can clean it with a wire brush or compressed air.

8. Test the starter motor. Once the solenoid plunger is free and clean, reinstall the starter motor and connect the battery negative terminal. You can test the starter motor by briefly touching the solenoid terminal with a wrench or screwdriver. If the starter engages, it's working correctly.

9. Reinstall the starter motor if it passed the test. If the starter motor is working properly, reinstall it and reconnect all the wires, terminals, and any other parts you have disconnected.

10. Reconnect the battery. Reconnect the negative terminal to the battery.

11. Test the starter again to ensure that the engine starts and stops normally.
