How do you replace the water pump on a 1995 Mitsubishi Mirage 1.5L?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Replacement water pump

- New water pump gasket

- Thermostat (optional)

- Thermostat gasket (optional)

- Coolant

- Funnel

- Socket set

- Wrench set

- Pliers

- Screwdriver

- Bucket

Instructions:

1. Drain the Coolant:

- Park your car on level ground.

- Allow the engine to cool down if it's hot.

- Locate the radiator drain plug, which is usually near the bottom of the radiator.

- Place a bucket underneath the drain plug and open it to let the coolant drain out.

2. Remove the Radiator Fan:

- Disconnect the electrical connector for the radiator fan.

- Remove the bolts holding the fan shroud and fan in place, and then remove the fan assembly.

3. Disconnect the Water Pump Hoses:

- Use pliers to squeeze the hose clamps and loosen them.

- Carefully remove the upper and lower radiator hoses from the water pump.

4. Remove the Old Water Pump:

- Locate the bolts or nuts holding the water pump in place.

- Use the socket set or wrench to loosen and remove these nuts/bolts.

- Be careful not to drop the bolts into the engine bay.

- Pry off the old water pump using a pry bar or screwdriver, and remove the old water pump gasket.

5. Clean the Mating Surfaces:

- Clean the mating surfaces of the water pump and the engine block thoroughly to remove any old gasket material or dirt.

6. Install the New Gasket:

- Place the new water pump gasket on the mating surface of the engine block.

- Make sure the gasket is properly aligned and seated correctly.

7. Install the New Water Pump:

- Position the new water pump over the gasket and make sure it's aligned correctly.

- Secure the water pump in place using the bolts/nuts you removed earlier.

- Tighten the bolts/nuts in a crisscross pattern to ensure even pressure distribution.

8. Reconnect the Water Pump Hoses:

- Reattach the upper and lower radiator hoses to the water pump, and secure them with the hose clamps.

9. Reinstall the Radiator Fan:

- Place the radiator fan assembly back into position and secure it with the bolts/nuts you removed earlier.

- Reconnect the electrical connector for the radiator fan.

10. Refill the Coolant:

- Remove the radiator cap and use a funnel to refill the cooling system with coolant.

- Reinstall the radiator cap and run the engine for a few minutes.

- Check for any leaks and ensure that the coolant level is correct.

11. Check for Leaks:

- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.

- Visually inspect the area around the water pump for any signs of coolant leaks.

- If there are any leaks, tighten the bolts/nuts until the leak stops.

12. Test Drive the Vehicle:

- Once the coolant level is correct and you have checked for leaks, take the vehicle for a test drive to ensure proper cooling.

13. Thermostat Replacement (optional):

- If you are also replacing the thermostat, follow these additional steps:

- Locate the thermostat housing, which is usually near the top of the engine.

- Remove the bolts holding the thermostat housing in place.

- Remove the old thermostat and gasket, and clean the housing.

- Install the new thermostat and gasket, making sure to position the thermostat correctly.

- Secure the thermostat housing back into place.

14. Recheck Coolant Level:

- Recheck the coolant level in the radiator and top it off if necessary.
