Tools and materials needed:
- New rear shocks
- Socket set
- Wrench
- Spring compressor (if needed)
- Jack and jack stands
- Safety glasses
Procedure:
1. Park the car on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Make sure the car is in gear or chocked to prevent it from rolling.
2. Jack up the rear of the car and place jack stands under the frame for support. Ensure the car is securely supported before you begin working underneath it.
3. Locate the rear shocks. The rear shocks are located on either side of the rear axle.
4. Loosen the nuts and bolts holding the top of the shock in place. Use a wrench to loosen the nuts and bolts, but do not remove them completely.
5. Support the axle. Place a block of wood or other suitable object under the axle to support it while you remove the shock.
6. Remove the bottom bolts holding the shock in place. Use a wrench to remove the bolts, then carefully lower the shock.
7. If necessary, use a spring compressor to compress the coil spring. This is necessary if the new shocks are not pre-assembled with the springs.
8. Install the new shocks. Position the new shocks in place and loosely install the top and bottom bolts.
9. Lower the axle and remove the support. Make sure the shock is properly seated in its mount before doing this.
10. Tighten the top and bottom bolts to secure the shocks in place.
11. Repeat steps 4-10 for the other rear shock.
12. Lower the car and remove the jack stands.
Double-check all nuts and bolts to ensure they are tight before driving the car. Test the suspension by bouncing the car up and down and ensuring it returns to its original position smoothly. If everything seems fine, you have successfully replaced the rear shocks on your 1992 Toyota Tercel.
