How do you change the thermostat in a 1989 Honda Civic LX?

1989 Honda Civic LX Thermostat Replacement

Tools Needed

* Flathead screwdriver

* Phillips head screwdriver

* Socket wrench set

* Funnel

* Coolant

1. Park the car on level ground and allow the engine to cool down.

If you try to change the thermostat when the engine is hot, you could burn yourself.

2. Locate the thermostat housing.

It's on the front of the engine, near the top. It's a metal housing with two bolts holding it in place.

3. Remove the two bolts that hold the thermostat housing in place.

Use a socket wrench to loosen the bolts, then remove them by hand.

4. Remove the thermostat housing and old thermostat.

Be careful not to spill any coolant that might be in the housing. The thermostat is inside the housing. Remove it by lifting it out.

5. Clean the thermostat mating surfaces.

Use a clean rag to wipe away any dirt or debris from the mating surfaces of the thermostat housing and the engine block.

6. Install the new thermostat.

Insert the new thermostat into the housing, making sure that the gasket is properly seated.

7. Reinstall the thermostat housing and bolts.

Tighten the bolts until they are snug.

8. Add coolant to the radiator.

Replace the coolant that you lost and use a funnel to avoid spills.

9. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.

Check for leaks around the thermostat housing. If there are no leaks, turn off the engine and let it cool down.
