Materials Needed:
- Replacement headlight bulb (check your owner's manual for the correct bulb type)
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- New headlight bulb (match the wattage of the original)
Steps:
1. Prepare and Access the Headlight:
- Park your car on level ground and make sure the engine is off. Engage the parking brake for added safety.
- Open your vehicle's hood, and prop it up with the hood prop.
2. Remove the Headlight Cover:
- Locate the access cover on the rear side of the headlight. For the 2005 Subaru Legacy, it is a plastic cover with a twist-lock mechanism.
- Turn the cover counterclockwise to release the lock, and then remove the cover from the headlight assembly.
3. Disconnect the Electrical Connector:
- Locate the electrical connector attached to the headlight bulb.
- Press the release tab on the connector and pull it straight out to disconnect it from the bulb.
4. Release the Retaining Clip:
- Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry open the metal clip that holds the bulb in place. Be careful not to drop or lose this clip.
- Push the clip down to release the bulb from the socket.
5. Remove the Old Bulb:
- Gently remove the old headlight bulb from the housing by pulling it directly out.
6. Install New Bulb:
- Take your new headlight bulb and insert it into the housing.
- Check to ensure that it is installed properly and aligns with the socket.
7. Replace Retaining Clip:
- Use the flat-head screwdriver to press the metal retaining clip back into place over the new bulb.
8. Reconnect Electrical Connector:
- Locate the previously disconnected electrical connector from Step 3 and reconnect it to the new headlight bulb.
- Push the connector firmly back into place until you hear a click, indicating it's secure.
9. Replace Headlight Cover:
- Reinstall the rubber or plastic cover that was removed in Step 2. Twist the cover clockwise to lock it in place.
10. Close the Hood:
- Release the hood prop and carefully close the hood of your car.
- Give a light press on the hood to make sure it is completely latched.
Repeat these steps for the other headlight if needed.
Testing:
- Turn on your headlights to check if the new bulb is working properly. Compare its brightness and alignment to ensure it matches the other headlight.
