Tools Needed:
- Socket set
- Open-end wrenches
- Phillips and flat-head screwdrivers
- Pliers
- Scraper or gasket removal tool
- Torque wrench
- Engine coolant
- New head gasket and other related seals
- Engine oil
Step 1: Preparations
- Park your Cavalier on a level surface and allow the engine to cool down completely.
- Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
Step 2: Remove Engine Components
- Remove the air filter housing and duct.
- Remove the spark plugs and wires.
- Disconnect and remove the distributor cap and rotor.
- Remove the upper radiator hose and drain the engine coolant into a suitable container.
Step 3: Remove the Valve Cover
- Use a screwdriver or socket wrench to remove the valve cover bolts.
- Carefully lift the valve cover and set it aside.
Step 4: Remove the Cylinder Head Bolts
- Remove the cylinder head bolts in a specific sequence, as outlined in your vehicle's service manual, to avoid warping the cylinder head.
- Use a pry bar or the flat-head screwdriver to help lift and remove the old head gasket.
Step 5: Cleaning and Inspection
- Use a scraper or gasket removal tool to carefully clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and engine block, removing all old gasket material.
- Inspect the cylinder head and block for any damage, cracks, or warping. If there's any significant damage, you may need to have the cylinder head resurfaced or replaced.
Step 6: Install the New Head Gasket
- Position the new head gasket over the cylinder block, ensuring proper alignment and orientation.
- Apply a thin layer of engine sealant or gasket adhesive around the oil passages and water channels.
Step 7: Reinstall the Cylinder Head
- Carefully lower the cylinder head back into place, making sure the head gasket stays in place.
- Reinstall the cylinder head bolts and tighten them in the reverse order of removal, following the correct torque specifications.
Step 8: Reassemble Components
- Reinstall the valve cover, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor.
- Reconnect the coolant hoses and refill the cooling system with the proper amount of coolant.
Step 9: Final Touches
- Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
- Start the engine and let it run at idle speed. Check for any leaks and ensure proper coolant circulation.
Note:
Replacing a head gasket requires a good understanding of engine components and procedures. If you're not comfortable with this type of task or encounter any issues, consider taking your vehicle to a qualified mechanic for assistance.
