- A ratchet
- A socket wrench
- A breaker bar
- A pry bar
- A new alternator belt
Once you have gathered your tools, follow these steps:
1. To remove the alternator belt, you will first need to loosen the adjusting bolt. This bolt is located on the upper right side of the alternator. Use your ratchet and the appropriate-sized socket to loosen this bolt.
2. Once the adjusting bolt is loose, you can use the pry bar to insert between the alternator and the drive belt. Push against the alternator to create slack in the belt, and then remove it from the pulleys.
3. To install the new alternator belt, simply place it around the pulleys and then tighten the adjusting bolt until the belt is snug. If the belt is too loose, it will slip and make noise; if it is too tight, it will damage the alternator.
4. Start the engine and check the belt tension. If necessary, adjust the tension of the belt until it is correct.
Here are some additional tips for replacing the alternator belt on a 1989 Mazda 323:
- Be careful not to drop the alternator belt into the engine compartment. If this happens, you will need to remove the engine oil pan to retrieve it.
- Take your time when installing the new alternator belt. It is important to get the tension just right.
- If you are uncomfortable replacing the alternator belt yourself, you can take your car to a mechanic to have it done for you.
