Gather the necessary tools and parts:
- Replacement exterior front door handle (make sure it's the correct fit for your Corolla)
- Screwdriver
- Phillips-head screwdriver
- Socket wrench set (metric sizes)
- Flashlight (if needed)
Prepare your car:
1. Park your car in a safe and level area.
2. Turn off the engine and allow the car to cool down if it's been recently driven.
3. Engage the parking brake to prevent the car from rolling.
Remove the interior door panel:
1. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws securing the interior door panel. These screws are usually located around the edges of the panel and in the armrest area.
2. Gently pry off the door panel using a flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool, starting from one corner and working your way around. Be careful not to break any clips or damage the door panel.
3. Disconnect any electrical connectors or cables attached to the door panel, such as those for the power window controls or speakers.
Remove the old exterior door handle:
1. Locate the screws or bolts that secure the door handle to the door frame. There might be a cover or trim piece concealing the screws; carefully remove it.
2. Use the appropriate screwdriver or socket wrench to loosen and remove the screws or bolts holding the door handle in place.
3. Carefully pull the old door handle out from the outside of the door.
Install the new exterior door handle:
1. Position the new door handle in place, aligning it with the mounting holes on the door frame.
2. Insert the screws or bolts you removed earlier and tighten them securely.
3. Reattach the cover or trim piece, if applicable.
Reinstall the interior door panel:
1. Reconnect any electrical connectors or cables you disconnected earlier.
2. Align the interior door panel with the door frame and press firmly to snap the clips into place.
3. Replace the screws you removed in step 1 and tighten them securely.
Test the new door handle:
1. Open and close the door several times to make sure the new door handle is functioning correctly.
2. Check that the handle is securely attached and there are no gaps between the handle and the door frame.
Double-check your work:
1. Make sure all screws, bolts, and connectors are tightened securely.
2. Inspect the door handle to ensure it's properly installed and working smoothly.
Once you've completed these steps, the new exterior front door handle should be successfully installed on your 1999 Toyota Corolla LE.
