How do you remove an automatic transmission from a 1997 Nissan Altima?

Tools Needed:

- 10mm socket

- 12mm socket

- 14mm socket

- 17mm socket

- 19mm socket

- 22mm socket

- 24mm socket

- Ratchet

- Breaker bar

- Torque wrench

- Floor jack

- Jack stands

- Fluid pump or turkey baster

- Oil drain pan

- Safety glasses

- Gloves

Procedure:

Step 1: Raise and secure your vehicle.

- Park your car on a level surface.

- Apply the parking brake.

- Jack up the front of the car and secure it on jack stands.

Step 2: Drain the transmission fluid.

- Locate the transmission fluid drain plug on the bottom of the transmission pan. It's usually a 17mm bolt.

- Place an oil drain pan under the drain plug and remove the bolt.

- Let all the fluid drain out.

Step 3: Remove the driveshaft.

- Locate the two driveshaft bolts at the transmission end of the driveshaft. They're usually a 14mm bolts.

- Remove the driveshaft bolts and lower the driveshaft.

Step 4: Remove the starter.

- Locate the starter on the side of the transmission. It's usually held in place by two 12mm bolts.

- Remove the starter bolts and remove the starter.

Step 5: Disconnect the electrical connectors.

- Locate the electrical connectors on the transmission. There should be two or three of them.

- Gently pry up on the locking tab of each connector and pull it off the transmission.

Step 6: Remove the transmission mounting bolts.

- Locate the transmission mounting bolts. There should be four of them, two on each side of the transmission. They're usually a 19mm bolts.

- Remove the transmission mounting bolts. The transmission will start to sag.

Step 7: Remove the transmission bolts.

- Locate the transmission bolts. There are usually four of them, two on each side of the transmission. They're usually a 22mm bolts.

- Remove the transmission bolts. The transmission will now be free to come out.

Step 8: Lower the transmission.

- Have a helper support the transmission while you slowly lower it out of the car.

- Be careful not to drop the transmission.

Step 9: Remove the torque converter.

- The torque converter is located at the front of the transmission. It's held in place by a few 22mm bolts.

- Remove the torque converter bolts and remove the torque converter.

- Use a pry bar to pry the torque converter off the transmission if it sticks.

Step 10: Inspect the transmission.

- Inspect the transmission for any damage. If there is any damage, you'll need to have the transmission rebuilt or replaced.

Step 11: Reinstall the transmission.

- Reverse the steps above to reinstall the transmission.

- Be sure to use new transmission fluid and a new transmission filter.

Step 12: Lower the vehicle.

- Slowly lower the vehicle off the jack stands.

- Remove the jack stands.
