Gather your tools and materials:
- Spark plug socket (5/8-inch)
- Spark plug wrench
- New spark plugs
- Spark plug gap gauge (0.054-inch)
- Ratchet
- Extension
Instructions:
1. Preparation:
- Allow the engine to cool completely to avoid any burns or injuries.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal to ensure safety while working on the spark plugs.
2. Remove the Engine Cover:
- Locate the engine cover on top of the engine. It may be secured by plastic clips or bolts. Remove the cover to gain access to the spark plug area.
3. Locate the Spark Plugs:
- Identify the back spark plugs located at the rear of the engine compartment. There should be three back spark plugs on the 3.0L V6 engine.
4. Remove the Ignition Coils:
- Disconnect the electrical connectors on top of each ignition coil.
- Use a ratchet with an extension to loosen and remove the ignition coil mounting bolts.
- Gently remove the ignition coils by pulling them straight up out of the spark plug wells.
5. Check Spark Plug Gap:
- Before installing new spark plugs, check the gap between the center electrode and the side electrode. The gap should be 0.054-inch. If needed, use a spark plug gap gauge to adjust the gap.
6. Remove Old Spark Plugs:
- Use a spark plug socket and ratchet to loosen and remove the old spark plugs. Be careful not to drop any debris into the spark plug well.
7. Install New Spark Plugs:
- Screw in the new spark plugs by hand until they are finger-tight.
- Make sure the spark plug gaskets are seated properly to avoid leaks.
- Use the spark plug socket and ratchet to tighten the spark plugs until they are snug. Do not over-tighten.
8. Reinstall Ignition Coils:
- Reinsert the ignition coils back into their respective spark plug wells.
- Secure the ignition coil mounting bolts and reconnect the electrical connectors.
9. Reinstall Engine Cover:
- Reinstall the engine cover and secure it using the plastic clips or bolts you removed earlier.
10. Reconnect Battery Terminal:
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal that was disconnected earlier.
Once all the steps are completed, start the engine and check for proper operation. If the engine runs smoothly and there are no unusual sounds or vibrations, you have successfully replaced the back spark plugs.
