How do you completely drain automatic transmission?

Draining the automatic transmission fluid requires you to disconnect the cooler line and let the fluid drain back into the pan as the engine is running. Some automatics have a plug that can be removed to drain transmission fluid.

Here are some steps on how to drain automatic transmission fluid:

1. Park your vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake.

2. Let the engine cool down if it has been recently driven.

3. Locate the transmission drain plug. It is typically located on the bottom of the transmission pan.

4. Place an oil drain pan under the transmission drain plug.

5. Use a wrench to loosen the transmission drain plug.

6. Allow the transmission fluid to drain completely. This may take several minutes.

7. Reinstall the transmission drain plug once all of the fluid has drained.

8. Locate the transmission cooler line. It is typically located near the radiator.

9. Disconnect the transmission cooler line from the radiator.

10. Place the end of the transmission cooler line into the oil drain pan.

11. Start the engine and let it run for a few seconds. This will pump the remaining transmission fluid out of the transmission and into the oil drain pan.

12. Turn off the engine and reconnect the transmission cooler line.

13. Reinstall the oil drain pan.

14. Add new transmission fluid to the transmission. The amount of fluid required will vary depending on your vehicle's make and model. Refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for the correct amount of fluid.
