Tools Needed:
- Jack and jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Socket set
- Ratchet
- Pry bar
- Pliers
- Screwdriver
- Grease
- New CV joint
- Replacement axle nut
Procedure:
1. Park your vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake. Engage the transmission into "Park" for automatic transmission or "First gear" for manual transmission.
2. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel that is on the same side as the CV joint that needs to be replaced. Do not remove the lug nuts completely.
3. Raise your vehicle using the jack and place jack stands under the frame to support the vehicle. Make sure the vehicle is stable and won't slip off the jack stands.
4. Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.
5. Locate the CV joint. It is usually near the wheel hub, where the axle connects to the wheel.
6. Use a pry bar to pry off the CV joint dust boot from the axle. Be careful not to damage the boot or the CV joint itself.
7. Remove the axle nut from the end of the axle. Use a socket and ratchet to loosen and remove the nut.
8. Pull the axle out of the transmission. This may require some force, and you may need to use a pry bar to help you.
9. Clean the axle and CV joint interface surfaces.
10. Install the new CV joint onto the axle. Make sure it is properly seated and secure.
11. Install the axle nut onto the end of the axle. Tighten the nut until it is snug, but do not over-tighten it.
12. Repack the CV joint dust boot with grease.
13. Reinstall the CV joint dust boot onto the axle. Make sure it is properly seated and secure.
14. Reinstall the wheel and tighten the lug nuts.
15. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands.
16. Test drive the vehicle to ensure proper operation of the CV joint.
