1. Gather Tools:
- Small flat-head screwdriver
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Replacement lighted ring (check Mercedes parts suppliers for the correct one)
2. Disconnect the Battery:
- Open the hood of your CLK and locate the battery.
- Remove the negative (-) terminal by loosening the nut with the wrench and pulling the terminal off the battery post.
3. Remove the Steering Column Covers:
- Use a small flat-head screwdriver to pry open the plastic cover around the steering column.
- Unscrew the Phillips-head screws holding the lower steering column cover in place.
- Remove the lower cover to expose the ignition switch area.
4. Disconnect Ignition Wires:
- Locate the electrical connectors plugged into the ignition switch.
- Carefully unplug these connectors by pressing the release tabs on the sides.
- Note their positions so you can reconnect them correctly.
5. Remove the Ignition Switch:
- On the back of the ignition switch, you'll find two screws.
- Unscrew these screws using a Phillips-head screwdriver.
- Gently pull the ignition switch out from the steering column.
6. Detach the Lighted Ring:
- Locate the old lighted ring around the ignition switch base.
- Use a small flat-head screwdriver to pry it loose from its housing.
- Gently pull the old lighted ring out.
7. Install the New Lighted Ring:
- Align the new lighted ring with the housing.
- Carefully press it into place, making sure it snaps in securely.
8. Reinstall the Ignition Switch:
- Insert the ignition switch back into the steering column.
- Secure it by tightening the two screws you removed earlier.
9. Reconnect the Ignition Wires:
- Plug the electrical connectors back into the ignition switch, ensuring they're firmly connected.
10. Replace the Steering Column Covers:
- Reattach the lower steering column cover and secure it with the Phillips-head screws.
- Snap the plastic cover around the steering column back into place.
11. Reconnect the Battery:
- Reattach the negative (-) terminal to the battery post and tighten the nut.
12. Test the Lighted Ring:
- Turn on your CLK's ignition and check if the new lighted ring illuminates properly.
