How do I change the front brake pads on 1999 Mazda 626?

Materials Needed:

- New brake pads

- Brake caliper wrench or C-clamp

- Ratchet

- Flathead screwdriver

- Wire brush

- Brake cleaner

Instructions:

1. Park the car in a safe location. Make sure the car is parked on a level surface, and that the emergency brake is engaged.

2. Remove the wheel. Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the front wheel, then remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.

3. Locate the brake caliper. The brake caliper is the large metal housing that contains the brake pads. It is located on the back of the wheel hub.

4. Remove the brake caliper. Use the brake caliper wrench or C-clamp to compress the brake caliper piston, then remove the two bolts that hold the brake caliper in place. Carefully lift the brake caliper off the brake rotor.

5. Remove the old brake pads. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the old brake pads out of the caliper housing. Be careful not to damage the caliper piston.

6. Inspect the brake caliper. Make sure the brake caliper piston is clean and free of debris. If the piston is damaged, it will need to be replaced.

7. Clean the brake caliper. Use a wire brush to clean the brake caliper housing. Be sure to remove any dirt, debris, or rust.

8. Apply brake cleaner. Spray the brake caliper with brake cleaner to remove any remaining contaminants.

9. Install the new brake pads. Place the new brake pads in the caliper housing. Make sure the pads are properly seated.

10. Reinstall the brake caliper. Carefully lower the brake caliper over the brake rotor. Be sure to align the caliper mounting bolts with the holes in the caliper housing. Thread the bolts into the holes and tighten them until they are snug.

11. Replace the wheel. Put the wheel back on the car and replace the lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts until they are snug, then lower the car.

12. Test the brakes. Pump the brake pedal several times to make sure the brakes are working properly.
