1. Locate the Clutch Master Cylinder:
Open the hood of your vehicle and locate the clutch master cylinder. It's usually a cylindrical reservoir with a black cap and is often labeled.
2. Check Fluid Level & Inspect for Leaks:
Before adjusting the clutch, check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. If it is low, add DOT3 brake fluid up to the "MAX" mark. Also, inspect for any leaks around the master cylinder and clutch lines. If leaks are present, you must fix them before proceeding.
3. Lift the Vehicle:
You'll need to raise the front end of your truck to access the clutch rod and other parts underneath the vehicle. Use a jack and jack stands to safely elevate the front end, ensuring it is secure and stable.
4. Find the Clutch Rod and Inspection Hole:
Locate the clutch rod, which is a metal rod connecting the clutch master cylinder to the clutch fork. It's often located near the transmission area underneath the vehicle. There should also be an inspection hole with a rubber plug nearby.
5. Turn the Push Rod Adjustment:
a. Remove the rubber plug from the inspection hole.
b. You should see the clutch push rod inside.
c. Insert a 5mm Allen key or appropriate tool into the hole to turn the clutch rod.
6. Depress the Clutch Pedal:
While keeping pressure on the adjustment tool, ask someone to depress the clutch pedal inside the vehicle. This helps seat the clutch properly.
7. Adjust the Push Rod:
Depending on the specific model and setup of your Chevy Xtreme truck, turning the adjustment tool may adjust the clutch rod either in or out. By carefully adjusting the rod, you can eliminate any clutch play and ensure smooth clutch engagement when you release the pedal.
8. Tighten the Lock Nut:
Once the clutch rod is correctly positioned, hold it in place with the adjustment tool and tighten the lock nut near the rod to secure the adjustment.
9. Test-Drive and Re-adjust if Necessary:
Take your truck for a test drive to check the clutch engagement and feel.
a. If the clutch engages too high, you may need to turn the adjustment tool slightly clockwise to reduce the free play.
b. If the clutch engages too low or the pedal feels spongy, you might need to turn the adjustment tool slightly counterclockwise to increase the free play.
