- New automatic transmission fluid (ATF) as recommended by your vehicle's owner's manual
- Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) filter (if applicable to your vehicle)
- ATF pan gasket (if applicable to your vehicle)
- Oil drain pan
- Funnel
- Wrench set
- Rags
Procedure:
1. Ensure the vehicle is parked on level ground and the engine is off and has been given enough time to cool down.
2. Locate the automatic transmission fluid drain plug. It's usually located on the bottom of the transmission pan.
3. Place the oil drain pan under the drain plug to collect the old fluid.
4. Use the wrench to loosen and remove the drain plug. Be careful not to drop the drain plug into the pan.
5. Allow all of the old fluid to drain into the pan. This may take a few minutes.
6. Replace the drain plug and tighten it securely.
7. Locate the automatic transmission fluid fill plug. It's usually located on the side of the transmission near the top.
8. Use the funnel to add the new automatic transmission fluid to the transmission. Add the amount of fluid specified in the owner's manual.
9. Replace the fill plug and tighten it securely.
10. If applicable to your vehicle, replace the automatic transmission fluid filter. This usually involves removing the transmission pan and replacing the filter located inside.
11. If applicable to your vehicle, replace the ATF pan gasket. This involves removing the transmission pan and scraping off the old gasket, applying a thin bead of new gasket maker, and reinstalling the pan.
12. Start the vehicle and let it run for a few minutes, allowing the new fluid to circulate through the transmission.
13. Check the fluid level again and add more fluid if necessary.
14. Test drive the vehicle to ensure everything is working properly.
Note: If you're not comfortable doing this job yourself, it's best to have it done by a professional mechanic.
