How do you repair a 944 hand brake?

To repair the parking brake on a Porsche 944, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • Jack and jack stands

  • Lug wrench

  • Ratchet

  • Socket set

  • Flat-head screwdriver

  • Phillips-head screwdriver

  • Parking brake cable

  • Parking brake lever

Note: Park the car on a level surface and engage the parking brake before starting this project. Additionally, this guide is for the second generation 944, so if you have a first generation 944, some steps may be slightly different.

    1. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels.

    2. Jack the car up and support it on jack stands.

    3. Remove the rear wheels.

    4. Locate the parking brake cable. It is a black cable with a metal sleeve at the end. It connects the parking brake lever to the rear brake calipers.

    5. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the rear brake calipers.

      - To disconnect the cable at the caliper, use a screwdriver to lift up the tab on the clamp and then pull the cable out of the clamp.

      - To release the cable at the cable connector near the axle, use a screwdriver to remove the lock tab and then pull the cable out of the connector.

      - To release the cable from the parking brake lever (inside the car), pry up the metal spring clip with a screwdriver and pull the cable out from under the clip.

    6. Remove the parking brake lever from the center console.

      - Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the two screws located at the rear of the console and pull the handle straight up to remove it.

    7. Inspect the parking brake lever. If it is worn or damaged, replace it.

      - Remove the boot by gently prying it off or cutting it with an x-acto knife and work the mechanism out of the console opening.

      - Remove the e-clip with needle nose pliers and then slide the assembly out of the center console.

      - To re-install, simply reverse these steps.

    8. Connect the new parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.

    9. Connect the new parking brake cable to the rear brake calipers.

    10. Test the parking brake. Make sure that it holds the car in place.

    11. Repeat steps 3-9 on the other side.
