How do you replace the axle and cv joints in a 2003 Honda Civic?

Replacing the axle and CV joints in a 2003 Honda Civic involves several steps and careful considerations. Here's a general guide to help you with the process:

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Replacement axle and CV joints

- Socket set

- Wrench set

- Pry bar

- Flat head screwdriver

- Axle grease

- Safety goggles

Step 1: Safety First

- Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface, and the parking brake is engaged. Set up chocks behind the wheels to prevent rolling.

Step 2: Remove the Wheel

- Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel that is on the side of the axle you'll be working on.

- Use a jack and jack stands to raise the vehicle safely off the ground.

- Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.

Step 3: Remove the Axle Nut and Retaining Ring

- Use a wrench to loosen the axle nut on the side of the transmission.

- Remove the cotter pin, then pry off the retaining ring.

Step 4: Disconnect the Tie Rod End

- Locate the tie rod end connecting to the steering knuckle; it's usually held by a nut.

- Use a wrench to loosen the tie rod end nut.

- Separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle by using a pry bar.

Step 5: Remove Axle Nut, Washer, and Pull Out Axle

- Remove the axle nut, washer, and pull out the axle from the transmission and steering knuckle.

Step 6: Separate CV Joint From Steering Knuckle

- Use a flathead screwdriver to pry apart the CV joint (located at the end of the axle) from the steering knuckle.

Step 7: Remove the Old CV Boot and Inspect the Joint

- Remove the old CV boot by carefully cutting or tearing it off.

- Inspect the CV joint for damage or excessive wear. If the CV joint is damaged, you'll need to replace that too.

Step 8: Repack New CV Joint with Grease

- Before installing the new CV joint, pack it with grease to ensure proper lubrication.

Step 9: Install the New Axle and CV Joint

- Insert the new axle and CV joint into the steering knuckle.

- Make sure that the splines on the axle and CV joint are properly engaged.

Step 10: Replace the Axle Nut and Washer

- Replace the axle nut and washer on the transmission side of the axle. Tighten the axle nut as much as possible.

Step 11: Reconnect Tie Rod End

- Reattach the tie rod end to the steering knuckle and secure it with the nut.

Step 12: Install New CV Joint Boot

- Install the new CV boot by stretching and securing it in place. Make sure the boot is tightly fitted.

Step 13: Replace Wheel and Lower the Vehicle

- Reinstall the wheel and fasten the lug nuts.

- Lower the vehicle using the jack and remove the jack stands.

Step 14: Test Drive and Confirm No Issues

- Take the car for a short test drive and ensure no abnormal noises or vibrations occur while driving.

15. Final Tightening of Axle Nut

- After driving a short distance, return to the workspace and recheck the axle nut.

- Tighten it again if it allows any movement.

16. Replace the Cotter Pin

- Finally, replace the cotter pin to secure the axle nut.

Note:

- For CV joint replacement, some models may require removing the lower suspension ball joint from the steering knuckle to provide enough clearance for axle removal and installation.

- The process of replacing the axle and CV joints can vary slightly depending on the exact year and model of your Civic, so it's always a good idea to refer to your vehicle's service manual for specific instructions and torque values.
