Check the transmission fluid level:
This is first step. Low transmission fluid can cause shifting problems, so make sure there is enough fluid on the system.
Check the shift solenoid:
The shift solenoid is an electrical component responsible for shifting gears. A faulty solenoid can prevent the transmission from shifting correctly.
Inspect the transmission linkage:
The transmission linkage is series of rods and levers that connect the shifter to the transmission. A damaged or misaligned linkage can cause shifting problems.
Test the transmission control module(TCM):
The TCM is computer responsible for controlling the transmission. A faulty TCM can prevent the transmission from shifting out of second gear.
Inspect for vacuum leaks:
Vacuum leaks can cause shifting problems some Chrysler models. Check all the vacuum lines for leaks and replace any leaking lines.
If none of the above steps work, you may need to have a transmission specialist take a look at your vehicle. There may be an internal problem with the transmission itself that needs to be repaired.
