1. Gather the necessary tools and parts.
- Jack and jack stands
- Socket set
- Wrench set
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Brake fluid
- New brake pads
- New brake rotors (if needed)
2. Park your vehicle in a safe location and turn off the engine.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Jack up the vehicle and support it with jack stands.
3. Remove the wheels.
- Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels.
- Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheels.
4. Remove the brake caliper.
- Locate the brake caliper on the back of the wheel hub.
- Use the wrench to loosen the bolts that hold the caliper in place.
- Remove the bolts and lift off the caliper.
5. Remove the old brake pads.
- The old brake pads are located inside the caliper.
- Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry the brake pads out of the caliper.
6. Inspect the brake rotors.
- The brake rotors are the discs that the brake pads press against to slow down the vehicle.
- Look for any signs of wear or damage on the rotors.
- If the rotors are excessively worn or damaged, they will need to be replaced.
7. Install the new brake pads.
- Place the new brake pads into the caliper.
- Make sure that the brake pads are seated properly.
8. Reinstall the brake caliper.
- Place the brake caliper back over the brake pads.
- Secure the caliper with the bolts that you removed in step 4.
9. Reinstall the wheels.
- Place the wheels back on the wheel hubs.
- Secure the wheels with the lug nuts that you removed in step 3.
10. Lower the vehicle.
- Use the jack to lower the vehicle back down to the ground.
11. Test the brakes.
- Start the vehicle and press the brake pedal.
- The brake pedal should feel firm and the vehicle should come to a stop without any pulling or vibrating.
12. Check the brake fluid level.
- The brake fluid reservoir is located under the hood of the vehicle.
- Open the reservoir and check the fluid level.
- Add brake fluid if necessary.
13. Refill the brake fluid.
- Bleed the brakes to remove any air from the system.
