How do you change the brakes?

Changing brake pads is a relatively straightforward task, but it is important to follow the correct steps to ensure your own safety and the proper function of your brakes.

Here is a basic overview of the steps involved:

1. Park your vehicle in a safe location and turn off the engine.

2. Block the wheels that are not being worked on to prevent the vehicle from rolling.

3. Locate the brake caliper on the wheel that you are working on. It is usually a metal housing that is located near the wheel.

4. Remove the bolts that hold the brake caliper in place. Be careful not to allow the caliper to hang by the brake line.

5. Once the caliper is removed, you will be able to see the brake pads. They are typically held in place by a metal clip or retainer.

6. Remove the brake pads by sliding them out of the caliper.

7. Inspect the old brake pads for wear. If they are thin, cracked or glazed, they need to be replaced.

8. Clean the caliper and brake rotor with a brake cleaner.

9. Insert the new brake pads into the caliper. Make sure that they are seated properly.

10. Reinstall the brake caliper and tighten the bolts.

11. Repeat steps 4-10 on the other wheel.

Here are some additional tips for changing brake pads:

* Use a brake caliper tool to compress the caliper piston. This will make it easier to remove and install the brake pads.

* Be careful not to get brake fluid on the paint of your vehicle. If you do, rinse it off immediately with water.

* If you are not comfortable changing your own brake pads, you can take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic.
