Do anti-lock brakes reduce braking distance?

Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) do not reduce braking distance on dry pavement. In fact, they can sometimes increase it. However, ABS does reduce the risk of skidding and losing control of the vehicle, which can be more important than reducing braking distance in some situations.

On wet or icy pavement, ABS can significantly reduce braking distance. This is because ABS prevents the wheels from locking up, which allows them to maintain contact with the road and continue to generate friction. Locked wheels slide on the road, which generates much less friction and can cause the vehicle to skid.

So, while ABS does not always reduce braking distance, it does make braking safer and more controlled.
