Can you get an inspection sticker in Massachusetts with a cracked windshield?

In the state of Massachusetts, vehicles must pass an annual safety inspection in order to be issued an inspection sticker. During this inspection, one of the things that the inspector will check is the condition of the windshield.

According to the Massachusetts Vehicle Inspection Regulations (540 CMR 4:00), there are certain cracks in the windshield that are considered to be minor and will not result in a vehicle failing the inspection. These minor cracks are defined as:

- Cracks that are less than 1 inch (2.54 cm) in diameter.

- Cracks that are not located in the driver's direct line of vision, which is within 14 inches (35.56 cm) of the steering wheel.

- Cracks that are parallel to the edge of the windshield, rather than perpendicular.

- Cracks that do not obstruct the driver's vision.

If the crack in your windshield is larger than 1 inch, is in your line of vision, or is perpendicular to the edge of the windshield, your vehicle may not pass inspection and you will be required to get the windshield replaced.

It is important to note that the inspector will use their own judgment when determining if the crack in your windshield is a safety hazard, so it is always best to have it checked out by an auto glass repair technician to ensure that it does not pose a risk to your safety or obstruct your vision while driving.
