Where is the speed sensor in a 1996 Monte Carlo?

1996 Monte Carlo - Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

1. Turn off the ignition and allow the engine to cool down.

2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

3. On vehicles equipped with ABS brakes, remove the passenger's side splash shield.

4. Raise and support the vehicle safely.

5. Locate the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). It is a small, black cylindrical-shaped sensor with two wires connected to it. The VSS is located on the transmission, mounted in the hole for the driven gear.

6. Disconnect the wire connector from the VSS.

7. Use a 24 mm wrench to loosen the VSS mounting bolt and remove the sensor from the transmission.

8. Inspect the sensor for damage and clean the threads of the sensor and in the transmission case of any debris. Apply a few drops of clean oil to the sensor's O-ring to ensure a proper seal.

9. Install the new sensor by hand until the threads engage. Then, use the wrench to tighten the mounting bolt. Do not overtighten.

10. Reconnect the wiring harness to the VSS.

11. Replace the passenger's side splash shield.

12. Lower the vehicle.

13. Connect the negative battery terminal and start the engine to check the speedometer for proper operation.
